APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • Please DO NOT turn in an application without holding.

  • This application needs to be made and kept public so that others in the game can read it. This is particularly important because of the variety of AUs that are possible.

  • Please do not change this application code. It will be linked from the Cast/Taken page.

  • Do not plagiarize. That said, you can re-use your own writing from prior applications, such as personality write-ups.

  • Example applications for what the mod is looking for can be found for Natasha Romanoff & Thraxus Boorman.

  • Applications are handled between 24-72 hours.

  • Regarding OOC pronouns: this field is optional. We do not require anyone to out themselves before they are ready or risk being misgendered. No questions will be asked if you delete the OOC pronouns field from your application.

MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF STRANGE THINGS

Its outward appearance might make it look like it belonged to a cult that took over an old Mexican food place, but the Massachusetts Institute of Strange Things — known as MIST — is a community center for the Mist People. Or, as someone lovingly called them: the MISTakes.

MIST is a multi-functional building with the aim to assist those MISTakes who need a little help. Don't know computers? MIST has a computer lab to show you the ins and outs of how to use a computer. Need clothing? MIST has a storage area full of a wide variety of items. Need curtains, blankets, or towels? MIST has you covered. Want to learn to fight? MIST hosts sparring and training sessions. Need physical care and don't want to go to a hospital? There's a clinic.

MIST is the hub for Mistakes to go to with information they have discovered about Dunwich. I will be creating a monthly timeline of things that happened with links for people to read over for latecomers.

Natasha Romanoff runs this full time. She's noticed that late at night, doors seem to close on their own.

(Right click, view image, and you can get a much bigger version of the layouts. The layouts have changed over time, but I don't want to redo the floor plans.)

FIRST FLOOR

The first floor is where most of the fun happens. It has:

→ Large tables that seat 20 people. These tables fold up to be moved around.
→ A beverage bar that includes coffee, tea, and a Coke Freestyle soda machine.
→ The restrooms do have stalls around the toilets. I couldn't figure out how to make them in the program I was using.
→ A computer lab with 6 computers. Thanks, Darcy Lewis and Kate Pryde!
→ A storage area for clothing
→ A storage area for other supplies
→ A walk-in freezer
→ A walk-in refrigerator
→ Wide hallway for storing things on shelves, like canned goods

BASEMENT

The basement contains:

→ An armory with more storage for supplies.
→ Tony Stark's former office which was renovated to make sure he didn't destroy the building with his gadgets.
→ More restrooms, and yes with stalls around the toilets.
→ A gym area that includes a large space for classes and sparring
→ A clinic that is slowly growing with supplies and equipment. Spock created a version of the medical tricorder. There's only one and no one to fix it.

EMPLOYEES

→ Natasha Romanoff - Owner and Home Base
→ Dr. Theo Crain - Psychiatrist & Support Group Leader
→ Erwin Smith - Head of Youth Programs
→ TBD - Head of Security
→ TBD - Head of Research
→ TBD- Researcher
→ TBD - Research & Development
→ Dr. Liv Moore - Head of Medical
→ TBD - First Aid & CPR Training

LINKS

→ You can find the schedule of events here.

→ MIST has an Arrival Protocol that we follow. You can find it here. This works in tandem with Pickman House.

VAMPIRES

The vampires in Dunwich are a strange sort. This one looks strange, that one seems to have no mind, and this one can walk in the daytime. It's almost as if this one isn't the same breed as that one.

They're not.

There are some basic facts about all vampires in Dunwich. The general folklore you've heard about vampires does have some basis in reality here.
  • All vampires drink blood to survive. They cannot do without it.
  • All vampires are immune to human diseases, however they can pass those diseases onto their victims. Most notably the recent Angel Fever going around.
  • All vampires can fly.
  • All vampires must be invited to a building by the proper owner of the building. A guest in your house cannot invite a vampire in. However, once invited, there is no way to revoke that invitation. Be careful who you invite into your home.

TYPES OF VAMPIRES

TYPE ONE; The rarest of vampires. These are actually considered lesser demons, the last remnants of magical beings who predated creation. They live for thousands of years, sometimes hibernated for hundreds at a time. Although they look humanish, their deformations are extreme. They are extremely emaciated, have thick, inch-long teeth that hinder them from being able to close their mouths. They can have an incredible amount of tumors on their bodies, a ton of body hair, or other physical defects.

Their bodies adapted a long time ago for hunting blood. They can smell blood from a long distance. Their teeth pierce skin easier. Their stomachs expand to hold as much as half their body weight in blood. Their tongue is long, prehensile, and can produce anticoagulants to apply to the victim's bites. Those of you with telepathy or aural sight can see that they have a blue or indigo aura.

Type Ones are extremely vulnerable to faith. Those with intense religious belief wielding a cross can drive them away or cause them to burst into flames. When their aura — their life energy — goes out, they will immediately putrefy into stinky yellow puddles. Ick.

Thankfully, Dunwich doesn't have any of these. (Or does it?)

TYPE TWO; These former humans were bitten by a Type One vampire, then that vampire mixed their blood. These poor people have no free will and almost none of their previous intelligence. They have an unquenchable thirst for blood, which is all they do when they don't have any bidding for their Type One master.

They are extremely allergic to ultraviolet light, which means they only come out at night. They have the same aura as Type Ones, albeit a little less intense. They are susceptible to faith or faith based objects if the user believes, but it will only drive them away. They will need to be killed via other means. Beheading and setting them on fire is the best way. And yeah, they make a stinky puddle too.

TYPE THREE; Humans who manage to make it away from a Type Two's bloodlust might find themselves with a need for blood. These vampires can pass as normal humans. They are able to move in sunlight, eat normal food (though they do need blood from time to time), and have very nearly their normal intelligence and personality. Their bite contains an enzyme that causes temporary memory loss and disorientation, giving them the luxury of not having to fight their victims.

Type Threes cannot pass on vampirism to those they bite. Their aura is very faint compared to the other two, and they are not nearly as strong. They are not susceptible to anything faith based, and can be killed with normal weapons in normal ways. However, when they die, their bodies dissolve away. Except their teeth and hair.

INTRODUCTION

A historic boarding house now run by Loki. Those who come through the thinnies are given free room and board here, with the option of moving into their own residence once they get their feet under them. It has a strange history and is probably haunted af.

LAYOUT

The front doors of The Pickman House open up into a historical but aging lobby with a front desk and office behind it. The interior has been carved up and remodeled over the last 250 plus years, but each floor of the house has a main hallway leading into small studio apartments, some of them oddly shaped that are about 200 - 215 square foot each.

What no one notices is how the house shouldn't fit as many floors or rooms within its structure. (That is for a future plot! For now your characters simply accept things as they are.) Then again, the locals don't seem to notice the strange outsiders that keep showing up within Dunwich. Maybe there's a connection there.

In the lobby of Pickman is a door that seems to go nowhere. However, if Natasha Romanoff is at MIST, you can open this door and walk through to find MIST.

YOUR STARTING ROOM

Each room is equipped with a small private bathroom, small kitchenette area and living space. Some rooms have murphy beds, others may have loft spaces for their beds, some are more bedroom than living space. Some have clever storage nooks, others do not.

You are free to imagine what your character's living space looks like, provided you stay within the 200-210 square foot limitation. Some of you may wish to have your characters move out as soon as they meet activity requirements, while others may choose to stay at The Pickman House for the free room & board, feeling safer within close proximity to other outlanders.

If you do not want to imagine or search for a layout for your character's space, feel free to use option one, option two, or option three. There's not a ton of space for personal belongings, but it's not like your character who just showed up had a lot on them, right?

THE CREEPYPASTA VIBES

WHY THIS PREMISE?
Creepy Stephen King-esque towns are our jam. It allows for some slice of life activities among the creepy stuff, like some of our favorite shows: Haven, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wednesday. Maybe you like Teen Wolf or the Vampire Diaries. All small, creepy towns.

HOW SCARY/DARK IS THIS GAME GOING TO GET?
On scale from Stephen King’s IT to the Stephen King based series Haven, we’re hoping for something a little closer toward Haven with more than the occasional foray into scarier stuff.

THERE ARE SOME THINGS I DO NOT LIKE ONE BIT.
Using content warnings is going to be key. If someone wants to write about spiders or child endangerment (gdi Pennywise) then it becomes critical that warnings are used so that people who do not like that content can skip on by.

On the flip side, if you do not like certain content, heed the warnings. Please don’t expose yourself to something with a content warning you don’t like and then complain that you read the thing you didn’t like?

DO I NEED TO KNOW ALL THE STEPHEN KINGS?
Nah, boo. But there will be all kinds of fun easter eggs for those who are King fans.

CAN I PLAY AN EVIL DOER?
The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes, as long as you understand that your character will likely be incarcerated permanently or possibly killed, depending on the plot. We're open and willing to all kinds of plots to accommodate players and their desires for certain plots, but the fact of the matter is that In Character Actions mean In Character Consequences so be prepared to work with the moderators and the others players to determine outcomes of these kinds of plots before you enact any part of them. Players, if at any time you notice that someone has started a plot that SHOULD have consequences (IDK, people talking about stealing stuff in public or if your character wants to rat someone out), talk to us sooner rather than later. The player in question may not understand how angry their character is making other characters. Basically, we need communication all around for this. As always, if you're ever unsure, hit us up. We will work with you.

TRIGGERY CONTENT

SO THERE'S A FLU?
Yep. It’s not as bad as COVID-19, and it’s certainly not anything near as bad as The Stand. It’s more like that wave of swine flu that happened several years ago with a bit of Dreamcatcher and Haven mixed in. See more information here.

WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?
You can bring in child NPCs or play younger characters in game. Just please use content warnings for child endangerment plots. We’re going to discourage folks from killing off their child NPCs. While it may be a Stephen King move in a book, a game is a longer lasting medium and do you really wanna RP your character in that headspace?

HOW ABOUT PREGNANCY PLOTS?
We’re not encouraging them, but they’re not banned from game. Keep in mind, you don’t know what your fellow players have been through when it comes to pregnancy, so we will tell you to proceed with caution and any mention of the pregnancy must have a content warning on the post, even if there’s a one off comment in a network post. If you can’t do that much, then don’t do a pregnancy plot.

SUICIDE AND SUICIDAL IDEATION?
No thank you. There is some of that in King’s work, but is that something you want to subject your line partners to? We hope not, especially if you do not know any of their personal history outside of game.

SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DUB-CON?
Some characters have SA in their canon backgrounds and that is allowed. We’re not interested in RPing that out in game. While we don’t want to kink shame people who like dub-con in fanfic, the problem with doing that in a game is instead of the story ending there are consequences after the fact which can be extremely uncomfortable to deal with. Let’s avoid the dub-con. Consent is sexy.

GENDER BENDING OR GENDER SWAPS?
We’re a trans friendly game. A number of us have explored gender identity through writing. Different writers are going to have different ideas on how to explore gender. We want every player to be free to write that exploration, but you do need to use content warnings.

SOMEONE WROTE SOMETHING THAT’S A TRIGGER FOR ME.
Tell a mod. We’ll tell the player to put it behind a cut-tag with a content warning. We want all our players to do their best to use warnings, but some triggers may be less common than others, or a player may have come up with an idea that they didn’t connect to a trigger by accident. As long as we all try to be gentle and understanding with one another, okay?

I WANNA EXPLORE A DIFFICULT OR POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING TOPIC.
Keep in mind we’re not therapists. If we have players that are therapists, they don’t want to be therapists during their pretendy fun times. We want to give you the space to write the things you want to write, but please be respectful of the space we’re giving you. If you start to worry your fellow players and mods, we may have a talk with you. Also please use content warnings and cut tags.

GAME MECHANICS

HOW DOES MY CHARACTER GET HERE?
While doing whatever, your character slipped through a Thinny. A thinny is a weak spot in reality where the fabric of the worlds has been worn thin. It usually looks like thick fog.

When a character is pulled from their own verse, do they go missing from that reality or is a copy of them left behind?
They do not go missing at all. They are taken from a certain point in time, and it's as if they were never gone from their canon). If a character goes back, they slip back into their canon without memories or missing time. This will allow people to pick up dropped characters without having to keep back history.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I WANT TO DROP A CHARACTER?
A swirling mist not unlike Todash Space surrounds your character, and they disappear through a thinny back to their dimension (we hope?) with no memories of being in Dunwich.

I dropped a character, and now have dropper's remorse. Can I pick them up again?
Adding and removing characters is kind of draining on the moderators, so we're going to have a two week waiting period between when you dropped the character and when you can pick them back up again. You will also need to get permission from your fandom mates and any close lines you formed during the time you were in game.

If I drop a character and pick them up again, can they remember being here?
Yes, they can remember. However, if we feel that this is being abused, the moderators reserve the right to say no.

Can strike-through texts like this by on character be seen by other characters on netposts and comments?
Strike outs cannot be seen! If it's a reply that it all strike outs, the other character will know they did a reply, but that they "left it blank."

Threads that have to be 400 words per character - what number of replies do they need to have?
Generally, we go with the 5/5 rule or 400 words from each character on the thread.

CAN I CANON BUMP MY CHARACTER?
Yes. Canon bumps will be allowed using an activity reward. (A canon bump, for those of you who don’t know, is when your character gets updated memories from their source material as new movies, tv show episodes, etc, come out.)

If I wanted to do an AC canon update, could it be less like memories downloaded and more like "here's a vision of the future you didn't ask for" via a dream?
Yes, and we love this idea.

Would I need to wait to get AC points if I'd like to come into the game with my NPC child/robot/pet?
Yes, all NPCs must have AC to come in. If you're currently in game and have the AC points, you can use those to bring the NPC in with them.

Would I need to AC for my character to go to school? And for a part time job?
Yup. Both would require 1 AC reward point each.

Can characters see icons/picture or just names?
We're pretty flexible/squishy on this. So if the two players of the characters interacting specifically want them to be seen or not seen, either works. Kinda like a zoom work call where someone can decide to have the camera on or off. Just communicate with players if you have something specific in mind that you want.

FANDOM AND AU QUESTIONS

CAN I PLAY ANY FANDOM?
Some authors don't like fanfiction of their stuff and actively and legally fight against it. At this time, we will not accept Harry Potter or any other characters from JK Rowling's novels. Not because those characters themselves are terrible, but because they’re too closely tied to Rowling’s transphobia and it’s not an association we want.

CAN I CREATE AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE FOR MY CHARACTER AND BRING THAT VERSION IN?
Yes. If your character is from an original universe, please give a detailed history of that character's life (and what their world was like if it's vastly different than our real world). If your character is from a fandom universe, please try to fill in any major changes to that universe. If you need examples, I suggest reading or looking up Marvel's "What If...?" series or comics. Fill in all those little things that would ripple and change because of a major change in the canon.

WHAT IF SOMEONE WANTS TO PLAY ANOTHER UNIVERSE VERSION OF A CHARACTER?
We welcome other versions. Please check a player's application to see if they allow alternates and email them to discuss before holding even if they answered yes on their application. It's just good manners.

CAN I PLAY PREVIOUS GAME CANON OF MY CHARACTER?
Absolutely. You will need to contact players of characters that had very close relationships with your character, the same way the mod asks you to contact players who have close canon lines.

Can I play an OC?
We have made the decision to change our stance on OCs. All OC's must belong to a fandom.

WHAT IS CANON PUNCTURING? AND IS IT ALLOWED?
It's telling a character that they are fiction. For example, your character told Anakin Skywalker that he was in movies in their world. Canon puncturing is not allowed, except in AC Reward cases. See the AC Rewards page (players only).

DO CHARACTERS HAVE TO HAVE PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY OR CAN THEY JUST BE AN OC FROM A FANDOM?
While we are open to OCs from a fandom, we usually defer to canon characters to make sure that there isn't much in the way of overlap. If your OC has the exact same powers and appearance of canon characters, we may run the concept by them to make sure there is no toe-stepping.

Can I play a Dunwich native as an OC?
No, Dunwich native OCs are not allowed. We're evil and using the Dunwich natives for our own nefarious purposes.

DO I NEED TO KNOW ALL THE FANDOMS?
No one's going to know all the fandoms, and there's plenty of Wikipedias to look them up if you feel that you need to. However, the joy of panfandoms is that the characters won't know that fandom either.

Do you have a Wanted section I can look through?
We don’t have a wanted section because I find they don’t get used or updated very well.

LIFE IN DUNWICH

WHERE ARE THE CHARACTERS LIVING?
Characters will be welcomed by Mobius at The Pickman house. See Dunwich Lore for more information on the building. From there, they can move into housing as they see fit once they’ve earned activity rewards.

Can my character share an apartment in the Pickman?
Yup, just let us know!

MY CHARACTER HAS A MORTAL WOUND COMING IN. HOW IS THAT TREATED?
Thinnies have many strange qualities, and while most of them are not great outcomes. Your character will find themselves healed enough from their wounds that they won't die. Maybe Dunwich needs you.

If I play a nonhuman with a really nonhuman appearance-- do they become human or do they get to keep their original appearance?
We're pretty flexible on the nonhuman appearances. If you want to play them as their regular appearance, go for it. if you want them to become human, go for it. Strangely enough, the locals won’t notice either way.

MY CHARACTER IS FROM A WORLD OR TIME PERIOD WITH NO SMART PHONES.
When they arrive in Dunwich, a local will likely hand you a phone, claiming you dropped it. You didn't, but Dunwich works in weird ways, and what do you know, the phone works for you.

Do tablets/phones/etc have text-to-speech ability?
Sure do! It'll be something Siri-like.

What happens if the character doesn't speak English? Does whatever brings them here give them an instant brain download?
We're handwaving this one. Whatever brought you here somehow gave you the ability to speak English. You'll still know your native language. Think of it as the Translation Circuit on the TARDIS.

WHAT ABOUT CURRENCY? HOW DO WE BUY THINGS?
Get a job, you bum!

RULES CLARIFICATION

WHAT COUNTS AS ACTIVITY?
A netpost, ten back and forth interactions on the network (five comments for each character), or a log or thread of at least 400 words from each character involved. You need three pieces of activity per month to remain in the game. However, going above and beyond earns rewards.

WHAT REWARDS?
If you make 4+ pieces of activity with a character in one month, a character can receive various items. Maybe they want something from home, like a vehicle or a pet. Maybe you want them to get a canon bump. Or they want a specific job. Or a house in the area. The players-only Activity Rewards page shows examples, and you can comment with what you'd like.

CAN I HAVE A PET?
As long as it's not bigger than a bear, we're good to go.

WHAT ABOUT VEHICLES?
Vehicles will be allowed on a case by case basis and must use an activity reward to gain them.

I have a question that's not on the list. How can I ask it?

LEAVING DUNWICH?

Bad idea, friends! Leaving Dunwich does not work out well for those non-native to this timeline/reality. Let’s call this barrier The Ghost Line. It’s about the size of Dunwich itself, seen in the map below:

Anyone who crosses The Ghost Line:
  • Your physical body drops to the ground, inside the ghost line, as if dead.

  • A ghost or psychic impression of yourself is what steps outside the ghost line. To the naked eye it can sometimes be seen as a small wisp of mist.

  • It's easier to view your incorporeal "ghost" form outside Dunwich on overcast or rainy days. It's nearly impossible on days with clear weather.

  • You can move at regular walking speed outside the ghost line. Like a dream, it is very difficult to run or move faster than that.

Well shit, I crossed The Ghost Line. Now what?
  • Your presence is made of "mist" the very unnatural force that brought you to Dunwich. Being outside of Dunwich you risk the larger world the longer you remain outside the ghost line.

  • Worst Case #1: horrors from the todash space are able to use your ghost form as a conduit to slip into this reality. It may not be the largest horrors, but that still doesn't make it good.

  • Worst Case #2: something from this world passes through you in part or in whole and ends up in the todash space. Do not walk through people. Hopefully all you do is some minor property damage.

  • Walk back inside the ghost line, and you wake up in your body, even if your body has been moved somewhere else. It's that easy? (Assuming your body wasn't moved outside the ghost line. You won't be able to wake up in your body until it's back in Dunwich.)

DUNWICH, MA

Dunwich is a quaint colonial tourist town best known for its beaches in the summer, its famous clams and chowder festival, in addition to apple picking in the fall. For the purposes of this setting we will be using the real life town of Ipswich, Massachusetts as a model. The size and general location will be the same as Dunwich.

The major differences include:
  • Dunwich is home to an, elite private university called Derleth College.
  • The Dunwich Horror is a local urban legend. Ask anyone in town, and they may or may not know what you're talking about or give conflicting information.
  • See the setting and lore page for the original locations and businesses in Dunwich.

Real life similarities include:
  • The game will be happening in real time. Your character enters the game the same date their application was accepted IRL and you introduce them to the game.
  • See the map below. We're using the real life location for Ipswich so you can see where the town is located. Thanks, google!

ANGEL FEVER

  • COVID-19 has not come to this reality. Instead there's been a strange illness much closer to the Swine Flu pandemic of 2009. The death toll is much smaller, though under reported. There've been no mask mandates or large social change or upheaval as a result.

  • Like the previous swine flu pandemic, the people most affected tend to be younger. Symptoms include fever, headache, dizziness, sneezing, muscle or joint pain, sore throat, chills, fatigue, runny nose, diarrhea and vomiting.

  • The government claims the virus came from factory farmed chickens, that this is an avian flu, but this is a coverup for the extraterrestrial nature of the virus.

  • For most people, the flu is a mild experience with no lasting after effects.

  • Those who are hospitalized or are more strongly affected by the virus, have a small chance of ending up with a minor ability with a drawback. Those who are hospitalized and receive that minor ability usually claim to have seen an Angel while experiencing a high fever, thus the name Angel Fever.

CONTRACTING THE FEVER

  • If you're interested in having your character come down with the extraterrestrial flu, they may end up with one of the following abilities listed below.

  • Characters who are not capable of getting sick, or already have abilities or powers, will be unaffected by the virus.

  • Those who end up with abilities aren't hallucinating when they say they saw an something that looked like an Angel. What did they see? Guess we'll find out.

  • See the "AC Rewards" located on the "Players Only" page for more details.

LIST OF POWERS

INJURY TRANSFER

DESCRIPTION: It looks similar to a healing ability except you take on another person's injuries in part or in full via touch. A handy way to keep someone alive, too bad it might result in needing sitches yourself.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption, you can transfer injuries to someone other than yourself via touch. Maybe they're willing or maybe it's self defense.

TELEPATHIC CONVERSATION

DESCRIPTION: While you can't read another person's thoughts, you can link up and speak to someone telepathically within conversational range.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption, you can advance your telepathic conversation skill to anywhere within Dunwich so long as you have spoken telepathically with them before.

"NIGHT" VISION

DESCRIPTION: Your eyes can pick up so many more colors than you were able to perceive before. It can be painful or overwhelming during the day, but you have decent vision at night. Good thing sun glasses exist.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption you can "see" a static psychic impression left behind by a traumatic event. They're faint and don't give the whole story, but still useful.

DIM

DESCRIPTION: To make yourself dim is to make yourself difficult to detect, if not completely invisible. It takes practice to make yourself dim, and difficult to come out of being dimmed.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption you can make other people "dim" with you, provided you maintain physical touch, like hand holding as an example.

CRACKS

DESCRIPTION: During your healing, you develop a painful rash on one of your arms. The skin cracks and peels as if burnt and when it does heal you are left with a faint network of scarring on the arm and hand (of your choice) and the searing agony of the cracked skin recedes to a dull ache. Once per day you can stretch the hand and cause a searing light to pour from the cracks, illuminating your surroundings in a 20 foot radius for an hour.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption this light seems to damage undead creatures like vampires and ghosts.

TWIN SOUL

DESCRIPTION: You survived Angel Flu, but someone else in hospital wasn't so lucky. You now share a body with the soul of a recently departed villager of Dunwich. You pick up one or two high level skills or knowledge from your twin soul (make an NPC). You also have periodic insight into whatever your twin soul can give you about the town. The insights come randomly and without warning and can be very distracting.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional AC, this soul can be temporarily transferred to another PC, but reverts back to you at sunrise. While the soul is transferred you no longer have access to the skills/knowledge it gives you.

THE EYE

DESCRIPTION: You gain an additional eye somewhere on your body. The eye opens irregularly, but can see auras of people revealing their emotional state.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption the eye unnerves animals and normal humans, causing them to momentarily freeze when held in its line of sight. Humans altered by the mist for plots and supernatural humans or animals have a 50% chance at being immune each encounter.

TODASH STEP

DESCRIPTION: You accidentally step through Todash Space, only to end up somewhere else in Dunwich. To you, it looks like stepping into a fog and stumbling out, although sometimes you can catch glimpses of terrible shapes in the mist. With practice, you can purposefully step into Todash space, but you have no control of where you end up. If you are frightened or caught by surprise, you cannot stop yourself from taking a Todash Step by reflex to get away.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional activity redemption, you can control the ending destination when you purposefully take a Todash Step, once a day after a long rest. It must be within 30 feet, and has to be a spot you can see not blocked by a wall or something else. You can still be frightened or surprised into taking a Todash Step somewhere on accident.

POWER-UPS

DESCRIPTION: Twice a day, at random, you find yourself infused with one of the following: quickened speed, abnormal strength, cat-like reflexes, or indestructibility. These infusions come only in two minute bursts. With time, you can control when you power up, but not what that power-up will be.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional AC, you can power-up for a duration of five minutes. The power itself is still random.

WINGED

DESCRIPTION: When frightened, you will suddenly find yourself with a set of mayfly wings. They sprout from your back and through your clothing — painfully — to allow you to glide down from heights or away from something. Then they return inside your body (you guessed it, painfully) after.

ADVANCED VERSION: For an additional AC, you will be able to able to control when they come out.

LAYOUTS AND CODING 🎈 TESS;
Do you even RP if you don't use a [insanejournal.com profile] tessisamess layout? This game layout would not be possible without their patreon, which we personally recommend for additional codes. Tess is rad people and is kind about helping folks with coding questions, too.

GAME WRITING 🎈 MARTY;
Many thanks to Marty for writing up 99% of the setting and lore page, the premise and other bits and bobs. "Hey Marty, can you do a write up for a lighthouse?" Bam. Done. Did you know they're a published author and ITW and CWA nominated? Buy their books! Marty is also one of our resident Stephen King experts, which you may have noticed is a pretty big inspiration here.

RESOURCE LINKS & THREAD CODES 🎈 MAXI & LENA;
The mods of [insanejournal.com profile] saveatlantis had a really excellent resource page, so many of the character development links and threading codes have been taken from them with permission.

INSPIRATION

STEPHEN KING 🎈 BOOKS, MOVIES, AND TV;
There's so much to choose from. We don't expect folks to be an expert on King, but in addition to streaming whatever movie or tv shows are available on the different streamers, we'll also add links below that you may find useful for reference.
  • STEPHEN KING STREAMING 🎈 Posted in January '23, hopefully they keep this list up to date? Doesn't include TV shows like Under the Dome (paramount), Castle Rock (Hulu), or Haven (not streaming ;__;).
  • THE LANGUAGE OF MID-WORLD 🎈 A glossary of low speech and high speech in case you want to pepper it into your RP and sound like a King expert.
  • STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE FLOW CHART 🎈 What it says on the tin. You don't need to know all of these and it's a little hard to read, but it's impressive to look at.
  • TIMELINE OF IT 🎈 A timeline of the events that happened in the book version of Stephen King's It.

MIKE FLANNIGAN 🎈 MOVIES AND TV;
Frequent Stephen King collaborator, not only did he do the excellent Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, but pretty much everything he's worked on for Netflix is excellent including, Haunting of Hilly House, Haunting of Bly Mannor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, etc. We're especially looking forward to Fall of the House of Usher and his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

DUNWICH RADIO 🎈 LINK;
Dawn put together a spotify playlist of popular songs for some spoopy vibes.

MUSIC FOR WRITING HORROR 🎈 LINK;
Instrumental music for when you want to get in the spoopy mood.

RESOURCES

WRITING CHARACTER RESOURCES
  • 8 TIPS FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT 🎈 Very short but insightful article that I think works really well for introducing new characters to a game, especially if folks aren't familiar with the fandom you're bringing in.
  • ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CHARACTER CREATION 🎈 A collection of all kinds of links and resources for writing characters, covering a number of different topics.
  • EMOTION WHEEL 🎈 Because there are deeper or more descriptive emotions than "happy" or "mad" or "sad".
  • WRITING SPECIFIC CHARACTERS 🎈 Another collection of links with writing advice for different character archetypes including villains, werewolves, sociopaths, actors, etc.
  • NEW ENGLAND WORDS & PHRASES 🎈 A collection of localized colloquialisms you might want to incorporate or use with NPCs.
  • SPEECH ACCENT ARCHIVE 🎈 A really cool audio collection of different voice accents for reference.
  • WRITING A BRITISH CHARACTER 🎈 A good overview since a lot of RPers tend to be American and a lot of popular RP characters tend to be from the UK.

RP SPECIFIC RESOURCES

FUN, USEFUL & RANDOM
  • WORD COUNTER 🎈 Make sure your app or log meets the word count.
  • TEXT DRUNIFER 🎈 Just in case your characters decide to text tipsy.
  • ZOMBIE IPSUM 🎈 A lorem ipsum generator with some spoop.

ARE YOU A NEW PLAYER?

We know that potential new players don't have access to the player list, so we've created a dropbox so that new folks can comment here with characters they would like to play from fandoms currently in the game. Some of the franchises have massive character lists and this is just easier all around than having to go around and comment on everyone's post.

Comment to the NEW PLAYER comment section with the character you'd like to hold, MAKE SURE YOU PUT FANDOM IN THE SUBJECT LINE and if you have any specific ideas you are interested in. Our players (and the mod) will reach out to you. Current players will have 48 hours to respond. After that, a mod will let you know you are free to hold.

REMEMBER: PLEASE WAIT FOR THE MOD TO CONFIRM ALL RELEVANT PLAYERS HAVE WEIGHED IN AND GIVE YOU THE OKAY TO HOLD.

ARE YOU A CURRENT PLAYER?

Sometimes it's difficult to track down all the players that might have lines with a potential character. Sometimes it's difficult to reach out. We're adding this section so that current players can drop a note here to request a character in a fandom present in game. Please note that you can still email, DM, and Drop Box players if you'd prefer. This is just to add another way to contact people.

UNPLAYABLE CHARACTERS

🎈 Due to player requests, the following characters will not be considered:
  • STRANGER THINGS: Chrissy Cunningham
  • STRANGER THINGS: Billy Hargrove
  • MARVEL TV/FILMS: Kahhori
  • HAZBIN HOTEL: Alastor
Why are these characters on the unplayable list? There's a variety of reasons. Chrissy has been in game multiples times, and it's taking a toll on the Stranger Things cast to have to tell her what happens to her each time. For Billy, the players do not want to deal with his racism and misogyny. Kahhori's world is vastly different than ours due to the fact that she stopped colonialization, and Alastor is an extreme case of anti-social personality disorder than usually ends up in murder.

WHAT ABOUT JOBS?

We have the jobs spreadsheet updated, but it's often difficult to message everyone who works there or goes there for permissions. Here is a space to ask about using those AC points for a job at a place in game, whether it's MIST, Derleth, the High School, or a random place around town, you can ask for it here.

Reply to the section devoted to jobs. In the subject line, put the name of the business. For example: DERLETH COLLEGE or MIST.

NOW WHAT?

🎈 Please TRACK THIS POST so that you can get email updates when they come in.

🎈 Since all players are/should be tracking this post, let's try to avoid spamming everyone's inbox:
  • Only reply if you have a character in that fandom OR you know the player and want to personally vouch for them (but clearly label if you don't have a character in that fandom, please).

  • We love enthusiasm! We want you to get excited about new players and make them feel welcome. Instead of doing a bunch of back and forth comments, leave a method of contact (discord, email, dropbox) so you guys can hype each other up somewhere not on this post.
🎈 Remember players, you have 48 hours to reply. (If you do not wish to reply on the post, please email the mods at spoilsofwar at gmail dot com.)
